- A death must be registered by law. You will need to make an appointment with the Registrar's Office,usually within 5 days, and take with you the doctor's Certificate of Cause of Death and, if possible, the deceased's Birth Certificate and Medical Card. You will be asked:
1 - the full name of the deceased and, if female and married or widowed, her maiden name and husband's name and occupation
2 - date and place of birth and death
3 - marital status and home address (and, if married at the time of death, the date of birth of the surviving partner)
4 - present or last occupation (if the deceased was in receipt of a Service Pension, the Registrar will require the Pension Book)

- You may be able to obtain a contribution towards the cost of the funeral from the Social Fund if you are in receipt of a qualifying benefit (Income Support; Council Tax Benefit; Housing Benefit; Working Families Tax Credit; Disability Working Allowance; or Job Seekers Allowance).
